BUSINESS BASICS

 

Practical, small business seminars go hand-in-hand with the advising services offered by the SBDC. If you have questions about starting or operating a small business, our Business Basics hands-on workshops are an efficient means to learn what you need to know. These workshops cover seven topics:  First Steps to Starting Your Business, Business Model Canvas, Financial Basics for Business, Marketing Basics, Planning Basics, Website Basics, and Human Resources Basics.  These courses can be taken as individual sessions or all seven as part of the series.  Each seminar is offered several times through the year, so choose only one date when registering.

 

Classroom instruction time is 2.5 hours, including time for questions and answers, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m.  Webinar instruction time is 1.5 hours, including time for questions and answers, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.  The fee is $30 per seminar.  You may cancel or transfer your registration up to five business days before the start date for a full refund.  If you do not show or cancel the day of the event, you are responsible for the full fee.  You may substitute another person for your registration at any time.

The First Steps to Starting Your Business

 

Many businesses start as a hobby or interest and now you are ready to take the next step and start your business. This class is for individuals who are looking for practical information for determining if they are ready to be an entrepreneur and the essentials for launching a business. We will learn about the initial steps to starting a business, formulate a plan to move forward, and where to seek out some excellent new resources. After class, attendees may request free, one-on-one assistance from the Small Business Development Center to refine their idea and prepare a business plan with financial forecasting. 

 

Business Model Canvas

Not sure if your idea is a great opportunity? Learn how to use this tool to help you more clearly define your business idea and develop your value proposition. Learn how to use nine building blocks for a customer focused business.

 

Financial Basics for Business

This workshop provides an introduction to the three basic financial statements: Balance Sheet, Income Statement and Cash Flows. We will discuss the terminology, methods of reporting and most importantly the uses for these statements. In addition, the workshop provides an introduction to sales and use tax, payroll taxes and an overview of the income tax impact of your business entity choices.

 

Marketing Basics for Business

Marketing is the strategic foundation for business success. Selecting target markets, analyzing the competition, building your promotion calendars and evaluating your marketing results will help keep your business on the right path. Begin to plan your marketing efforts.

 

Planning Basics for Business

Create value through customer focus. A written business plan helps you control your business rather than letting it control you. Attend this program to learn the business planning process and start writing your plan. Discover how to target your market, analyze competitors, and examine your strengths and weaknesses. Learn how to set goals and develop financial projections. Using the Business Canvas to identify your customers and determine their needs, you will analyze information and incorporate it into a feasible business plan.

 

Website Basics for Business

Learn a specific 10-step process to getting your business Web site online. Everything from how to register a domain name to learning how to accept payments. More specifically, this workshop will cover the following topics:

 

  • Develop a budget
  • Register domain name
  • Select a Web host
  • Select a Web site template
  • Site architecture
  • Write Web content
  • Install Google Analytics
  • E-commerce setup
  • Recruit affiliates
  • Optimize your content for search engines

 

Human Resources Webinars

Ideal for small and growing businesses, these evening online webinars give an introduction to critical human resources topics to aid in the management of your ever-changing business.  It provides an introduction to a variety of team management practices and strategies. Best of all, these classes can be taken from the comfort of your home!  

The fee is $30 per seminar.  You may cancel or transfer your registration up to five business days before the start date for a full refund.  If you do not attend the webinar, you are responsible for the full fee.  You may substitute another person for your registration at any time.

 

Webinars are from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.  Prior to the webinar, registrants will receive an email with login information for online access.

Working with a Challenging Employee

Are you having trouble communicating with or guiding the workflow of someone on your team? Do you have questions about how to get your employees to work more effectively together? This second night of the series focuses on communication strategies, specifically related to tough employee situations. 

 

Performance Management: Employee Reviews, Coaching, and Documentation

Is it time to give your employees their annual review? Having trouble addressing problem areas? If so, this evening online webinar is for you!  This third night of the series focuses on relaying good and challenging performance feedback and how to document the things you’re working through with your employees.
